Bushenyi Parental Care Nursery and Primary School emerged as champions in the junior category of the 2023 National Speech and Debate Championship, which concluded last week.
The school’s affirmative team triumphed over Bright Grammar Primary School, Masaka, who argued in the negative, in the intense debate finals held on Friday, May 12. The event took place in the prestigious Parliament of Uganda chambers in Kampala.
The championship aimed to sharpen the minds of young learners on critical issues such as strengthening transparency, accountability, and combating corruption as integral components for the country’s development.
It served as a platform for students to showcase their debating skills and understanding of these important topics.
In the senior category, St. Mary’s College Kisubi (SMACK) emerged as the victors in a thrilling competition against Kawempe Muslim Secondary School. The motion for the 11th edition of the championship was “Deepening Transparency, Accountability and Anti-Corruption Among Young People.” SMACK secured a 4:3 split decision from the judges, who were impressed by their analytical abilities, extensive research, and eloquence, propelling them to the pinnacle of debating excellence.
Benson Turamye, the Executive Director of PPDA and the chief guest at the event, commended the articulate and confident performances of the young participants. He emphasized that the fight against corruption should involve citizens of all ages and encouraged Ugandans not to shy away from confronting this issue. Turamye urged everyone to unite in exposing corrupt practices and holding wrongdoers accountable.
It is worth mentioning that Bushenyi Parental Care Nursery and Primary School is renowned not only for its excellence in debating but also for its consistent academic achievements, consistently earning the highest number of first grades year after year.
The competition drew participation from esteemed schools such as Kawempe Muslim Secondary School, St. Mary’s College Kisubi (SMACK), Bright Grammar Primary School, and Masaka, among others.
However, it was Bushenyi Parental Care Nursery and Primary School from Bushenyi Municipality that emerged as the undisputed champions, leaving their competitors impressed with their exceptional performance.
