KAMPALA – Former Presidential Candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye has expressed shock over the manner in which the state withdrew a treason case filed against him in 2016.
‘This case was, apparently, stealthily dropped two years ago! Neither me, the accused, nor my lawyers knew about this,’ Besigye said in a Twitter Post, Tuesday Morning.
Besigye, a member of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) was in May 2016 arrested and charged with treason after he announced and swore in himself as the duly elected President of Uganda.
However one of the local dailies, on Monday reported that the then Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Mike Chibita in December 2019 wrote to the Nakawa Court, discontinuing the case without stating any reason.
‘Charges were dropped by the same DPP who had sanctioned the trumped-up charges now supreme Court judge Mike Chibita. It is curious how, why the information came out now,’ Besigye said.
In his post, Besigye said he was first charged with the same treason case in Moroto, Karamoja and remanded in Moroto prison.
He added that ‘Later that case was withdrawn; I was transferred to Luzira and charged afresh in Nakawa court. I was released on bail after two months in Luzira.’
