The Uganda National Roads Authority (Unra) has made a decision to prevent heavy trucks from using the Ssezibwa Bridge, which is nearly 70 years old and located on the Kalagi-Kayunga Road. This choice came about due to structural problems with the bridge, particularly a section on the Kayunga side that has collapsed, posing potential dangers to road users, especially those in motor vehicles.
The Ssezibwa Bridge, constructed in 1953 during colonial times, has not undergone significant renovations throughout its history, apart from occasional painting.
Unra has issued a public notice on October 7, addressing all road users, in which they highlighted substantial surface defects on the bridge that necessitate significant changes in the current traffic arrangements for the Ssezibwa section. As an alternative route, Unra has suggested that traffic from Jinja can use either the Kampala-Jinja Road, which is approximately 72 kilometers long, or the Njeru-Kisoga-Mukono Road, which is around 64 kilometers long.
