Cheptegei, Chemutai to be promoted – IGP Okoth Ochola


The Inspector-General of Police, Martins Okoth-Ochola, has said that Olympic medalists Joshua Cheptegei and Peruth Chemutai will be handed higher ranks in the force once they return from Japan.

Ochola, whose statement was read by Police spokesperson Fred Enanga on Monday, also hailed former IGP Gen Kale Kayihura for creating. a directorate, a fund, and a unit that identifies athletes and supports them to compete in global events.

Ochola hailed Gen Kale Kayihura for creating a special fund in the Police to promote sports.

Remember yesterday, the Former Inspector General of Police, Gen Kale Kayihura on Sunday morning took part in a 16-km run in celebration of the Ugandan athletes who won medals in the Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

“On Sunday 8th August. 2021, my staff and I ran a 16-km road run in our beautiful, undulating Katebe, Kashagama to celebrate and honour our heroes of the Tokyo Olympics, and the glory they gave brought to our country, Uganda.”


Peruth Chemutai

Peruth Chemutai, won the Tokyo 2020 3000m Steeplechase gold, becoming the first Ugandan woman to win an Olympics medal.




World record holder Joshua Cheptegei won a silver in the 10,000 metres race and gold in the 5,000 metres race. Chemutai on the other hand won a gold medal in the Olympic 3,000m steeplechase.

Cheptegei, with a time of 12 minutes, 58.15, became the first Ugandan to win the event as he bagged the Olympic gold that has eluded him for so long.
