KAARO KARUNGI | KIRUHURA – Police in Kiruhura district have arrested twelve suspected cattle
thieves on charges of disobedience of lawful orders against foot and
mouth disease quarantine restrictions and theft of livestock.
The twelve suspected thieves were found with carcasses of sliced
beef in their homes in different locations in Kiruhura district.
The district police commander Kiruhura Tibakirana Musa confirmed the
report saying the suspected thieves who included one woman were
transferred from Sanga police station to Kiruhura district police
station for further investigations.
Tibikirana appreciated the local community and other security agencies
who helped in giving police intelligence information that unscrupulous
traders were transporting livestock at night,
He said, “in Kiruhura district since the February 5, 2021 quarantine
restrictions were imposed because of foot and mouth disease, however,
some unscrupulous individuals have been violating the quarantine
measures by buying cows as well slaughtering animals.”
Last night of May 12, 2021 police and other security agencies managed to
arrest twelve people who were violating quarantine measures as well as
suspected of being engaged in stealing animals,
He said in the process of arresting them one farmer managed to
identify his cow that was stolen two days ago
The suspected thieves were using motor vehicle registration number UBA
501 R ipsum and Canter registration number UBB 476 A.
One of the victims Kahonda Asaph said that they have spent many days
without sleeping while guarding their herds but all in vain the
thieves have continued to steal their animals and now he was appealing
for government intervention to provide extra security.
Ms Nsasira Harriet a security official in Sanga appreciated the
community for cooperating with the police to give information
Most people in Sanga trading center say that they were shocked the
morning Eid Al Fitri and yesterday last night after discovering their animals
are slaughtered in big numbers without their knowledge.
