Lwengo district police commander Peter Akampurira says that they have launched a manhunt for the assailants. According to eyewitnesses, the assailants were donning police jackets but Akampurira says criminals can use anything to disguise their operation.
Akampurira says they are yet to get any clues on the murder. Police have towed the deceased’s vehicle to Mbirizi police station as investigations continue.
Kato has been transferred to Mulago National Referral hospital in Kampala. Matovu’s body is lying at Masaka hospital mortuary pending a postmortem.
The attack comes two days after unknown assailants opened fire on the vehicle of the former chief of defense forces (CDF) General Katumba Wamala, killing his daughter, Brenda Wamala Nantongo, and driver Haruna Kayondo. Katumba survived with two bullet wounds to his shoulders.
