Parliament has asked the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities to clarify the situation regarding the alleged loss of a significant amount of money in the issuance of gorilla tracking permits. It is reported that about 60 billion shillings were involved in this incident, which allegedly involved Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) staff.
During a recent parliamentary session, Thomas Tayebwa, the deputy speaker of Parliament, requested Martin Muggarra, the state minister of tourism, to provide information about the matter without compromising ongoing investigations.
This request came after Rubanda West MP Moses Kamuntu raised concerns about the gorilla tracking permit issue, emphasizing the importance of investigating it to prevent the loss of substantial funds, particularly in light of limited resources for tourism road construction.
In response, Minister Muggarra acknowledged the ongoing investigations between the Ministry of Tourism and UWA, which had already been initiated before the matter became public. He assured Parliament that a statement would be issued the following day to update them on the progress of the investigations.
As a result of the reports regarding the alleged scam, several UWA staff members have been suspended pending further investigation.
