A 26-year-old Lebanese national has been arrested by the police on allegations of sexually assaulting and procuring an abortion for a 19-year-old Ugandan woman.

The Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, reported that the victim, a resident of Kulambiro Jomayi in Nakawa Division, Kampala District, filed the complaint. The incidents in question occurred between July and September 2023 while the victim was employed as a housemaid by the suspect, who is a 26-year-old Lebanese national and a sales manager at Bipous Limited, residing in Bukoto, Nakawa Division, Kampala District.

The victim, during her employment, disclosed that she was subjected to repeated sexual assaults and coerced into an abortion. She explained that her employer, on multiple occasions, summoned her to his room around 8 pm, during which he initiated sexual advances. Due to her vulnerable situation and reliance on the job for her livelihood, she felt powerless to refuse the suspect’s advances.

These incidents of sexual assault continued until September when the victim’s health deteriorated. At this point, the suspect took her to Victoria Hospital, where she was diagnosed with pregnancy. Subsequently, it is alleged that the suspect arranged an abortion for her, which had significant adverse effects on her health.

Kira Road Division initiated an investigation, and the victim underwent a medical examination by a surgeon, confirming her condition and documenting physical injuries. A statement from a witness who provided assistance to the victim after her escape from the suspect’s residence has been recorded. As of Saturday morning, the suspect remains in police custody and has cooperated with the police during interviews.

Owoyesigyire emphasized that Kampala Metropolitan Police will conduct a comprehensive and impartial investigation to ensure justice is served and to protect the rights and safety of all individuals involved.
