In Mubende on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, a disturbance took place in response to an alleged robbery, which resulted in the deaths of two individuals.
The two deceased suspects were known only by their nicknames, Murefu and Kabode. They hailed from Nsangi and Nsangi, Wakiso District, respectively.
A third suspect, identified as Frank Bamuhire, aged 28 and a resident of Namasuba Zone B in Makindye, was rescued by the police amidst resistance from the agitated crowd, leading to the firing of live bullets.
Preliminary investigations indicate that on October 4, around 2:30 am, Janvier Bunani, also known as ‘Manager Fish’ and a prominent businessman in Kalonga Village, Kalonga Sub County in Mubende District, was attacked by three assailants armed with machetes. They demanded money, which prompted him to raise an alarm, bringing residents to the scene.
The assailants managed to escape with Shs6 million, two smartphones, and a Personal Video Recorder (PVR) used for CCTV surveillance.
“Angry residents pursued the suspects until 6:00 am. They formed groups and eventually intercepted three suspects at Bwakago and Bukongo villages. Police successfully rescued the second suspect,” stated Ms. Rachel Kawala, the Wamala regional police spokesperson.
Notably, this marked the second time this year that Bunani’s business premises were targeted by armed robbers. On June 19, during the afternoon, three armed robbers attacked his premises, and a police officer identified as Joseph Oloya, who had gone to intervene, lost his life to the attackers.
Residents of Kalonga have been requesting the establishment of a police post in the area since January.
