One person died and 10 others were admitted to Mityana Hospital in critical condition after eating food suspected to have been poisoned.
This occurred at Kalagala village in Nkyamazzi parish, Bukuya town council in the family of Moses Jesero Salongo.
The victims were first admitted to a clinic in Bukuya town, but were later referred to Mityana Hospital.
Relatives taking care of the victims in Mityana Hospital said the family members had eaten porridge which is suspected to have been containing poison.
“They returned from the garden and prepared porridge which they ate. However, the father, Jesero, did not taste the porridge. He only took water,” Ruth Nampoza, a relative, said.
Some of the victims who spoke to Kaaro Karungi News suspect that it was the water at their home that contained the poison.
“The deceased did not take the porridge, but also died after presenting with similar symptoms. This means it was the water we used,” Sarah Namuyaba, the wife to the deceased who is also admitted, said.
Medics at Mityana Hospital said on Friday, August 6 that some of the victims were improving and would soon be discharged.
The Police, however, said all the victims were poisoned through porridge.
Racheal Kawala, the Police spokesperson for Wamala region, said the family had left porridge in the kitchen uncovered, which gave a chance to someone to drop their poison.
“We are investigating Jesero’s murder and the rest of the family members who were poisoned,” she said.
Kawala said one person had been arrested over the incident but did not give details.
Although Kawala said only eight people were admitted to the hospital, Kaaro karungi confirmed 10.
