Kampala University recently hosted its 11th Cultural Gala at the Nursing and Health Sciences School in Mutundwe. The event featured students from various university campuses who showcased their talents and celebrated cultural diversity.
More than 21 student associations from Kampala University’s five campuses participated in this year’s gala, offering spectacular performances and a sense of togetherness. The four-day event, held from September 27th to September 30th, 2023, revolved around the theme “Cultural Identity: A Sense of Belonging.”
Students delighted the audience with traditional dances, renditions of the university anthem, folk songs, and poems, all rooted in their respective cultural traditions. Additionally, students took part in a modeling segment, where they flaunted their casual, office, dinner, creative, and traditional attire.
The highlight of the gala was a performance by Spice Diana, whose hit song “Siri Regular” added energy and glamour to the event. The University Vice-Chancellor, Owek.Amb. Al-haj Prof. Badru Kateregga, even joined Spice Diana on the dance floor, further enhancing the festive atmosphere.
Nkobazambogo Students Association from Ggaba Campus emerged as the winners, receiving a bull as their prize, while Zambogo Jinja Campus secured the second place with a he-goat.
Mr. Katamba M from the Nursing School was crowned Mr. Culture, with Mr. Wandahwa Emmanuel from Luweero Campus as the second runner-up. Birungi Linda was named Miss Culture from Jinja Campus, and Akankunda Rachel from Luweero Campus became the second runner-up. All winners received generous cash prizes from the university management.
The gala also attracted notable guests, including the Rector of Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), Prof. Ismael Gyagenda Ssimbwa, University Vice-Chancellor Owek.Amb. Al-haj Prof. Badru Kateregga, and other university officials. Prof. Kateregga emphasized the importance of cultural galas in nurturing talents, promoting cultural respect, and fostering discipline and creativity among students.
With over 1000 students representing various associations from different campuses, the event truly celebrated the rich cultural diversity within Kampala University.
