Mbale City police in Uganda have taken thirteen students from three major secondary schools into custody. They were arrested for staging a protest and blocking traffic. The students come from Nkoma Secondary School, Mbale Secondary School, and Progressive High School.
These students hit the streets after being expelled from their respective schools on Tuesday morning due to unpaid fees. Their protest led to the blocking of Pallisa road, where they threw stones at passing vehicles.
Rogers Taitika, the police spokesperson for the Elgon region, explained that the police acted promptly to disperse the protesting students. They have arrested thirteen suspects who are currently detained at Mbale Central Police Station. Authorities are actively searching for more students who are currently evading capture. Taitika stated that the students would be facing charges related to inciting violence and causing intentional damage to property.
