ONO BWINO: Eddy Kenzo Is Not the First Ugandan To Be Nominated for Grammys. Here Is a List of Other Ugandans Who Have Been Nominated Before.


Ugandan media is filled with the news of Edrisah Musuuza alias Eddy Kenzo for being nominated for world’s 2023 Grammy awards under the ‘Best Global Music Performance’ category.

The singer has been nominated alongside 9 other stars including Burna Boy from Nigeria.  Other nominees in the mentioned category include; Arooj Aftab (Pakistani based in the US), Anoushka Shankar (British American), Matt B (American), Rocky Dawuni (Ghanaian), Black Hero (Jamaican), Wouter Kellerman (South African), Zakes Bantwini (South African) and Nomcebo Zikode (South African).

However different media houses are reporting that Eddy Kenzo has become the first Ugandan to be nominated in the Grammys, something which is not true. Kenzo is actually the 4th Ugandan.

Below were the first nominees!

  1. In 2005, ‘Abayudaya’ Album from the ‘Jewish people of Uganda’ in Mbale produced by Jeffrey Summit was nominated for a Best Traditional World Music album at the 47th Grammy Awards.

  1. In 2007, SINGING FOR LIFE: SONGS OF HOPE, HEALING AND HIV/AIDS IN UGANDA, a 14-track CD featuring various Ugandan musicians earned a nomination for the Best Traditional World Music Album (Vocal or Instrumental) in the Grammy Awards, 2008!

These included; Bakuseka Maja Group with Olumbe Lubiibi, Kibaale Village Embaire Ensemble with Olumbe Lwamala Abantu, Jumbo Theatre Group with Struggle Against AIDS; MUDINET Drama Group with Such Painful, Merciless Diseases; Kanihiro Group with Silimu Yaheeza Abantu, Mzee Mata Nasani/Akadongo with Emagombe Newaife and Meeting Point Kampala with Abange Abeeno? NACWOLA Iganga with Guno Gwe Mulembe Gwe Tulimu Kati, Women Actresses with Bannange Twajjirwa, Negro Angels Bamalayika with Gampisi, Bukona Women’s Group with Silimu Okutumala, Centurio Balikoowa with Abalugana and Walya Sulaiman/PADA with What Is in The Luggage.

The Grammy-nominated CD was produced by Gregory Barz, an associate professor of ethnomusicology at Vanderbilt University Blair School of Music in Nashville, US. It was officially released on February 20, 2007 on a Smithsonian Folkways Recordings label in the US

  1. In 2020, Michael Kiwanuka was nominated for the 2021 Grammy Awards under the Best Rock Album category. Kiwanuka is a Ugandan, London-based, British singer-songwriter and musician. He is a son of Ugandan immigrants who escaped the Amin regime and is the Patron Kids Club Kampala.
