KAMPALA:
The commander of the Land Forces of the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has come out to refute allegations that he was stopped from tweeting.
Until late last month, Muhoozi who is also first son was using his tweeter handle with more than 573,000 followers to air out his opinions on different subjects.
However, some of the comments include those on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, backing Rwanda for any conflict and supporting Tigray rebels fighting Ethiopian government among others were highly criticized by a section of Ugandans.
For about a month now, Gen Muhoozi reduced his twitter activities which created speculations on the reason behind this move.
Media reports suggested that President Yoweri Museveni also commander-in-chief had stopped him and other military commanders from commenting about security and foreign policy issues on social media platforms.
The reports further indicated that Museveni asked the UPDF generals to use the platforms to discuss sports, political ideology, education and youth issues.
However, Gen Muhoozi on Thursday came out to refute reports surrounding his ‘silence’ on tweeter which he said are fabricated by people who are scared of him and other young people.
“President Museveni never stopped me from tweeting. That is a fabrication by people who are scared of us. And by ‘Us’ I mean the young people of this country i.e. ‘New Uganda’.” Tweeted Muhoozi
This is not the first time, Ugandans are concerned about the UPDF general’s twitter usage.
In April this year, it was alleged that twitter had suspended his account for violating its civic integrity policy before it was discovered that he had deactivated it himself. The account was reactivated few days later.
