Ugandan cardiologist Dr. Aggrey Kiyingi, who had been living in exile in Australia, has passed away. He was also known for facing accusations of involvement in the 2005 murder of his lawyer wife, Robinah Kiyingi.

His wife, Mayimuna Nakayiira Kiyingi, confirmed his death in a statement, expressing her profound sadness. She referred to Dr. Kiyingi as her beloved husband and stated that he had “peacefully departed from our lives.”

Dr. Kiyingi, who was a consultant cardiologist based in Australia, had also been accused by the Ugandan government in 2015 of funding terrorism. Additionally, he had presidential ambitions and intended to run against the incumbent Yoweri Museveni in the 2016 elections.

In 2016, the Director of Public Prosecution at that time, Mike Chibita, discontinued charges of terrorism, murder, and crimes against humanity that had previously been filed against Dr. Kiyingi. These charges had emerged in the midst of a series of brutal murders targeting prominent Muslim clerics around 2015.

This development came approximately ten years after the Kampala High Court had acquitted Dr. Kiyingi of the allegations of murdering his wife in December 2006. His passing is mourned by his family and those who were impacted by his life.
