Four-time presidential candidate Kizza Besigye has revealed that he was surprised that court had dropped a case against him in 2019.
While addressing the media at the Justice Forum (JEEMA) head offices in Mengo, Besigye said he hasn’t been aware that the treason cases against him had been dropped in 2019.
‘I was surprised to read in the newspapers that the cases against me had been dropped,’ Besigye said.
He recalls when he was arrested after he declared himself as the President of Uganda after the 2016 elections.
‘I recall I was arrested while I was around mini price in Kampala. I was driven to Nalufenya under tight security and later transferred to Moroto where I was charged with treason.
From Moroto, I was again transferred to Nakawa court where I was charged for the same case twice, ‘Besigye said.
He said he wasn’t aware that he has been a free man since 2019.’ I always thought that I was still under bail but I have just understood it today that I have been free since 2019,’ Besigye said.
Besigye said when he inquired from his lawyers about those cases being dropped, they informed him that they were not aware.
Besigye also said they are bothered by the National Unity Platform ( NUP) not joining their recently launched pressure group dubbed the People’s Front for Transition ( PFT).
He revealed that he has been having engagements with the NUP leaders even before the 2021 general elections and even after them.
He also said that after the launch of their pressure group, NUP Party president Robert Kyagulanyi also congratulated him.
