As the new wave of COVID19 continues to worry the nation, Kyambogo University, one of the Government funded Higher Institutions of Learning has temporarily closed in prevention of the virus from spreading amongst its students.
In a statement dated 2nd June 2021, from the office of the Vice Chancellor addressed to all Staff and Students, it was announced that the closure is as a result of recommendations from a team of health experts led by Dr. Monica Musenero, the Senior Presidential Advisor on epidemics.
The Vice Chancellor revealed that this visit followed an increase in cases of covid19 infections with many of the students having symptoms like cough and headache.
“Some have been tested for covid-19 but many of them have refused to be tested. It is unfortunate that the situation may be worse than reported.”
The team after its investigations, reported to the Management that it had made an impromptu tour around the University and noted that about 70% of the population was not properly wearing face masks and observing social distance.
They warned that if such negligence continued the spread of the virus was to escalate.
The team therefore advised that there should be temporarily closure of the University for a period of 10 days; limitation human contact and immediate ceasing of physical classes.
In accordance with the findings, the University Management resolved to suspend all physical activities on campus for a period of two weeks with effect from 4th to 18th June 2021. These activities include lectures, workshops, seminars, meetings, group discussions and practical to mention but a few.
