KAARO KARUNGI | MAKERERE – There was drama at Mitchell Hall on Friday night after the Makerere University Guild Presidential candidate of the National Unity Platform (Aaron Oguttu) was arrested by Police, days to the election.
Mr. Oguttu, a resident of Mitchell Hall was bundled out of his hall by Police officers under unclear charges and hurled to Wandegeya Police Station, where he was still detained by press time.
Our reporters at the Police station said the presidential aspirant received visitors today who included among others Makerere University strike master Obed Gui Jalmeo and the Deputy Lord Mayor, Ms Nyanjura Doreen.
“We want him freed. There is nothing he did wrong. Unless the Police are suggesting that it is criminal to be a supporter of NUP.” Obed-Gui told our Kaaro Karungi.

From our discussions with some of the police officers who were part of the arresting group, Oguttu and some other students “violated curfew laws by running around the university way past midnight as they made noise and chanted.”
The strike master, who had himself expressed interest in the position and attained the Uganda Young Democrats (UYD) flag, later withdrew from the race and backed Mr. Oguttu that many consider a favorite in the race.
Oguttu is a student at Makerere’s College of Education.
