Godfrey Nsubuga, a golfer from Mehta Golf Club, has emerged as a strong contender for the 2023 Uganda Open. His recent victory in the Kericho Tea Fields tournament, where he outperformed top Kenyan amateurs like John Lejirma and Ebil Omollo, has set the tone for the upcoming competition. Nsubuga’s impressive performance indicates that he is a favorite to win the amateur golf championship.

In the Kericho Tea Fields tournament, Nsubuga secured victory by carding a three-over total of 219. This earned him the winners’ trophy along with a cash prize of Kshs 74,000 or Shs1.88m. He displayed consistent rounds of 73, 70, and 75 to outlast Lejirma, who posted scores of 73, 73, and 75.

The 2023 Uganda Open is scheduled to begin next weekend, commencing with the Ladies Open at the par-72 Uganda Golf Club (UGC) course in Kitante.

During the Open’s launch on October 2, Emmanuel Wamala, the UGC captain, announced, “We have prepared the perfect course for all golfers who will participate in the competition. As a club, we have also offered three free rounds of practice for all the golfers taking part in the Open.”

Martha Babirye is the defending champion in the ladies’ category, while Andrew Sekibega and Zimbabwe’s Robson Chinhoi hold the amateur and professional titles, respectively.
