NIRA Shocks Applicants with Cancelled Job Advert and Secret Shortlisting

On December 19th, 2021, the National Identification and Registration Authority of Uganda (NIRA) placed an advertisement in the widely circulated New Vision newspaper. The advertisement was calling for qualified and competent individuals to apply for the position of Manager Public Relations and Corporate Affairs, a critical and strategic role within the organization.

To the delight of NIRA and the hopeful candidates, the advertisement was met with an overwhelming response. Thirty candidates submitted their applications, all of whom were highly qualified and suitable for the role.

The applicants were eager for the chance to work with one of the most important governmental bodies in Uganda, and had invested time and effort into crafting their applications.

However, the excitement was short-lived as the Executive Director, Rosemary Kisembo, suddenly cancelled the advertisement. This decision left the applicants confused and disheartened, as they had put in significant time and resources into their applications, only to be told that their efforts had been in vain.

In the wake of the cancellation, rumors began to spread that the recruitment process had been compromised. A source, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed to our Reporter that three candidates who were completely unqualified for the position had been secretly shortlisted despite the cancellation of the job advertisement.

This revelation raised significant questions about the integrity of the organization and the recruitment process. It appeared that the qualifications and skills of the applicants were not the only factors being considered in the hiring process. Instead, it seemed that certain candidates may have been favored over others for reasons unrelated to their qualifications.

As a result of the controversy, the public began to lose trust in NIRA’s recruitment process. There were calls for greater transparency and accountability from the organization’s leadership, and a demand for an explanation for the cancellation of the advertisement.

Ultimately, the scandal cast a dark shadow over the organization and its reputation. The hope is that NIRA will take the necessary steps to restore public trust and ensure that its recruitment processes are fair, transparent, and merit-based in the future.
