KAARO KARUNGI | NEWS – One person was confirmed dead and seven others severely injured in a Saturday afternoon accident at Maya, along the Kampala –Masaka highway.
The accident according to eyewitnesses happened when a taxi, registration number, UBH 523G moving from the direction of Masaka to Kampala attempted to overtake two vehicles and had a head-on collision with a Toyota Harrier, registration number UBH 448J which was moving to Masaka side.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed the accident and noted it was caused by reckless driving on the side of the taxi.
“The driver was trying to overtake two other motor vehicles and rammed into the Toyota Harrier. This led to the death of one of the passengers,”Owoyesigyire said.
He however noted that investigations into the exact cause of the accident are still ongoing.
The Uganda Police Annual Crime Report for the year 2020 indicated that Uganda loses at least 10 people per day due to road crashes with pedestrians and motorcyclists among the biggest victims.
The report released recently indicated that at 34 percent, 1258 pedestrians were killed in road accidents in 2020 whereas 1146 motorcyclists, representing 31 percent died in accidents.
