Uganda’s Leader of Opposition (LOP), Joel Ssenyonyi, has petitioned the Inspector General of Government (IGG), Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), and Auditor General to investigate allegations of financial impropriety at Parliament.
Ssenyonyi raised concerns about a disbursement of 2.6 billion shillings to Speaker Among in a 146-day period. He argues that this amount suggests the Speaker was absent for half a year, which he contests.
“The Speaker is always here,” Ssenyonyi remarked, “even after giving birth to twins, she resumed her duties within two weeks.”
Ssenyonyi emphasized the lack of a satisfactory response from Parliament, prompting him to petition the relevant authorities.
Ssenyonyi has requested investigations into allegations of corruption and abuse of office at Parliament. He urged Speaker Among to avoid deflecting accusations by bringing up past controversies or irrelevant personal matters.
Ssenyonyi stressed that Ugandans are more concerned about ensuring accountability for public funds rather than the Speaker’s personal disputes.
