National Unity Platform (NUP) Lawyer and Kampala Woman Member of Parliament Shamim Malende returned home Monday morning from the Kenyan capital Nairobi, where she has been receiving treatment for three months.
Malende was picked up at Entebbe International Airport by a group of party members and supporters. Rolled in a chair, the lawyer told reporters she still felt weak, but mentally strong to carry out her legal obligations to the party.
“I still have medical reviews in Nairobi because I am still on medication,” Malende Said
“I was going back to hospital every two days, but when the doctors determined that I could go back after a month, I decided to come home and do some work.” She Added
Malende was taken to Agha Khan Hospital in Nairobi at the end of November last year from Rubaga Hospital. She underwent some emergency abdominal surgery as it was reported that lawyers at the time feared she had ‘ingested a strange chemical’
Earlier on 13th November 2022, she was admitted to Uganda Martyrs Hospital in Lubaga after having a seizure while at her home in Kawempe.
In a brief speech today, Malende thanked the NUP leadership led by president Bobi Wine for visiting him in the hospital and providing him with safety and care.
“For now I am focused on returning to render my services to the people as a lawyer; to help those who are helpless for free,” Malende Said
“I am hurt our foot soldiers are still getting arrested with no help; some people were celebrating that our (Head of Legal) Wameli is dead, and I am bed ridden, but I can assure you that I am back and ready to start from where I left.” She Added
On November 9th, 2022, she was arrested by police in Kawempe, where she was discovered distributing reflective vests to boda wearers. She was stopped by police and taken to Kawempe Police Squadron Headquarters, where she was held for at least three hours and released without charge.
Malende has been at the forefront of demanding justice for incarcerated National Unity Platform (NUP) opposition party supporters and will spend most of her time in court.
