In a recent announcement at his retirement celebration in Kisoro Municipality, Gen (Rtd) Kale Kayihura, the former Inspector General of Police, stated that he has no plans to enter politics. Instead, he intends to concentrate on farming after leaving the army.
Gen Kayihura retired from the military shortly after being acquitted of charges related to illegal repatriation of Rwandan refugees and failure to protect war materials in a court martial.
During his retirement event, Gen Kayihura made it clear that he has no interest in pursuing elective politics, dismissing rumors that he was eyeing the Bufumbira East parliamentary seat in Kisoro District. He expressed his apprehension about elective politics, emphasizing his dedication to farming in his retirement.
Gen Kayihura also discussed the false charges against him, expressing gratitude to President Museveni for his thorough investigation that revealed the truth. He stressed that he had no case to answer and was not pardoned.
He extended his appreciation to several individuals who supported him during his trial, including Kisoro District chairperson Abel Bizimana, Gen Andrew Gutti, Gen Wilson Mbadi, Gen David Muhoozi, Maj Gen James Mugira, Maj Gen Sam Kavuma, and his legal team. He also acknowledged the support of Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Gen Salim Saleh Akandwanaho, and his wife Jovia.
Gen Kayihura concluded by affirming his pride in being a retired military officer and expressed his gratitude to his family.
Religious leaders led ecumenical prayers at the event, emphasizing the importance of unity and love among people.
Local leaders, including former Kisoro District Woman Member Of Parliament Rose Kabagyeni, Bufumbira East legislator James Nsaba Buturo, and Mr. Bizimana, urged Gen Kayihura to join them in promoting development initiatives in the district and advocating for the fulfillment of presidential pledges related to infrastructure projects.
Dr. Nsaba Buturo highlighted the strong relationship between Gen Kayihura and President Museveni as a valuable asset for the people of Kisoro.
