KAARO KARUNGI | RUKUNGI DISTRICT – The Rukungiri District Veterinary Officer Mr. Ninsiima Johnson has allayed fears expressed by livestock farmers who are worried that the National Livestock Census is a basis for levying taxes on them by the Government,
According to Ninsiima Johnson the Livestock Census is meant to collect data regarding livestock in the country for policy and planning purposes adding that farmers should provide the right data regarding the animals they rear to make the exercise successful.
However, unlike districts which lie in the cattle corridor, Rukungiri district being in the non-cattle corridor will be handled through selected villages and families as samples.
According to the Technical Supervisor of the National Livestock Census for Rukungiri District Mr. Tumuheirwe Christopher, enumerators will be adorned in light green aprons for easy Identification and will be holding appointment letters from the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, and thus called upon farmers to stay away from fraudsters.
He also emphasized that the exercise is aimed at obtaining the structure of livestock within the country for easy and effective accountability.
The exercise which started yesterday will be conducted within 162 selected villages in Rukungiri District up to 4th June 2021.
