The National Unity Platform (NUP) has stated that more than 100 of its supporters were reportedly arrested by the police during an operation aimed at preventing a planned march to welcome party president Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine. He had returned from international trips to Canada and South Africa on Thursday, October 5, 2023.

According to Kyagulanyi, who posted a list on his social media, the number of party supporters allegedly detained currently stands at 120 people, with more individuals yet to be identified. Kyagulanyi, who is currently under house arrest, estimated that over 300 party supporters and leaders might have been detained since October 2, 2023, prior to his return.

In response, Kyagulanyi mentioned, “Our legal team, leaders, and other comrades have been able to rescue many of them on police bond, while several others are being taken to court over senseless charges. Our teams are working hard to follow up on all these illegal arrests. We shall overcome!”

Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango, in a statement issued on Friday, contradicted these claims, stating that only 40 suspects, including Busiro South Member of Parliament (MP) Charles Matovu, were arrested, primarily for inciting violence. Onyango asserted that these individuals would face charges in court as police operations continued.
