At least ten Sironko district councillors have petitioned Mbale high court to compel the district to pay them their 90 million shilling ex-gratia.
Ex-gratia is a form of payment given as a favour or from a sense of moral obligation rather than because of any legal requirement.
Allan Muduku, one of the petitioners and representative of Bukise Sub County, says each of them is entitled to Shillings 520,000 during each quarter of the financial year, however, the district has not paid them between 2017 and 2020 for unknown reasons.
Muduku explains that their attempts to seek an explanation from the Chief Administrative Officer-CAO did not yield results forcing them to seek legal redress.
Sironko Chief Administrative Officer, Bernard Seguya attributes the non payment of the ten councilors to delayed funding of the newly created administrative units by central government, and are yet to receive funding for the newly created sub counties and town councils like Butandiga, Mutufu and Bugusenge among others.
Isaiah Sasanga Wanzira, the Budadiri East member of parliament has promised to follow the matter in parliament since not only Sironko is affected.
