Cycling is slowly but steadily taking root in Western Uganda under the newly established Mbarara City Cycling Club (MCCC).

The Mbarara City-based club that started in April last year has now seen it important to start up a cycling academy and recruited young female and male riders to promote the sport.

“We have a vision for the club through the young riders. We want to train them from a young age which can help us build a better and competitive riding club for both national and international competitions in the future,” said team manager Harold Waguma.

It being an expensive sport, only five young boys and one girl have been recruited and are undergoing training through internal competitions as the current situation of Covid-19 restrictions has yet to allow external competitions.

The recruited are U-15 include Ivan Mukasa, Elvis Mulumba, Michael Samuel, Livingstone Bakabulindi Swahed, Emmanuel Asiimwe, and Addah Ninsiima.

Waguma says they have organised a three-phase competition within the region where the rider with cumulative points will run away with goodies on the final day on October 9.

The Sport that had gained prominence in the region and Uganda at large in the early 2000s, went into silence after the binding mother Mbarara Cycling Club faced financial constraints thus abandoning the sport.

So far, 50 cyclists both young and senior male and female riders, have been registered and they all take part in their Sunday Exercise cycling.
