Uganda’s Sevens coach, Tolbert Onyango, revealed the squad set to represent the nation at the upcoming World Rugby HSBC Sevens Challenger in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The tournament, scheduled to take place from January 12-14, will see Uganda compete in Group C alongside Germany, Kenya, and Mexico.
Onyango expressed confidence in the team’s preparation, emphasizing a mix of experienced players and younger talent. Having led Uganda’s Sevens team for over eight years, the former Kenyan International highlighted the team’s determination to approach each match as a final, with the ultimate goal of reaching at least the quarterfinal stage to secure valuable ranking points.
Team captain Ivan Munyani conveyed the team’s readiness for the Dubai matches, acknowledging the competitive nature of all participating teams. Munyani stated, “We know what to expect because all teams are good, but we shall stick to our game plan.”
The World Rugby HSBC Sevens Challenger 2024 Series will feature a diverse lineup, including teams like Uruguay, China’s Hong Kong, Papua New Guinea, Georgia, Japan, Tonga, Chile, and Portugal, in addition to those in Group C.
Uganda is not only fielding a team in the men’s category but also in the women’s category. The women’s team will compete alongside Belgium, Thailand, and Papua New Guinea.
