KAMPALA – Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has said it is important that they put their heads together to tackle climate change.
“The quality of air in our city is quite alarming. As Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), we are struggling to raise the funds required to realise the ideals enshrined in the KCCA climate change Action Plan 2016, the 2020 KCCA Green Infrastructure Ordinance and the Paris Agreement, among other things,” he said on Monday.
Air quality refers to the measurement of how clean or polluted the air might be.
The Air Quality Index (AQI) report for last month indicates that air in the Kampala suburbs of Wandegeya was the best, while Kisenyi and Kawempe were the worst in registering the highest pollution index.
The best air was registered at the ministry of health offices in Wandegeya (AQI 110) and at City Hall in central Kampala with AQI 116.
In Kisenyi and Kawempe, the AQI was 129, according to the report that was released by the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) on Monday.
NEMA said in a statement that the air quality was generally unhealthy for sensitive groups of people such as those suffering from heart-lung complications.
The average reading was AQI 129 which NEMA said is beyond the recommended ambient air quality index of AQI 100.
The high AQI readings are attributed to a range of human, economic and social activities, including vehicular emissions during traffic congestion, dust from unpaved roads, grain milling, etc.
Lukwago’s remarks come ahead of the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference from October 31 to November 12 in Glasgow. Climate is the average weather in a place over many years and climate change is a shift in those average conditions.

Experts say the Earth is now in a period of rapid climate change, with global temperatures rising.
